Mixing Concrete

For concrete mixes for each type of application, refer to the concrete section in A Handbook of Gravity-Flow Water Systems, Thomas Jordan Jr.

  1. Select a flat location near where you'll be pouring the concrete as your mixing area. If you have a zinc sheet or an existing concrete pad, this will reduce the amount of lost concrete.
  2. You'll most likely be using the volcano method of mixing concrete. Mix your dry materials (rock, sand, cement) thoroughly.
  3. One method to ensure a good mix is to create a pile of all dry materials. Then move the pile back and forth a few feet away. Repeat until there are no pockets of any one material.
  4. Once dry materials are mixed, create a cavity in the center of the mound. Pour a little water into the cavity and mix.
  5. Repeat adding water in a center cavity until you have the correct consistency. Most community members have experience with concrete. If you have never mixed concrete, enlist the help of someone that has until you feel comfortable mixing on your own.

  1. If you have access to a wheelbarrow, this is good way to mix small batches since you can transport the concrete and will not lose concrete while mixing.
